INTRODUCTION

International Conference on Education 3.0 2023 (INCOED 3.0 2023) centering on the theme of education will be organised by UNITAR International University

The conference will also promote advancement in theory, research and practices in education and will provide a platform for researchers, practitioners and educators to present and discuss the most recent innovations, trends, and concerns as well as practical challenges encountered, and solutions adopted in the fields of education.

By building on collective knowledge and experience of educators from different education arenas, this conference also aims to bridge the gaps of knowledge and learning loss caused by educational inequity, crisis hit education and promotes the concept of education beyond borders.

OBJECTIVES

  1. To provide a platform to showcase the most important transformations that have to be nurtured to realize everyone’s fundamental right to education and build a more sustainable, inclusive and peaceful future
  2. To provide a platform for the exchange of the most recent research findings and ideas in the field of education and to present new teaching pedagogy
  3. To encourage research and publication through paper submission
  4. To form opportunities for future networking between organizing universities in future projects of mutual interest
  5. To provide opportunities for UNITAR students and staff to take ownership of and gain from the experience of organizing an international education conference
  6. To provide a place for academicians, professionals and students with cross-disciplinary interests related to education to meet and interact with members inside and outside their own particular disciplines

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Dr. Mirian Vilela
Executive Director
UPEACE

Dr. Mirian Vilela is the Executive Director of the Earth Charter International Secretariat and the Center for Education for Sustainable Development at UPEACE. Mirian has been working with the Earth Charter Initiative since early 1996. She coordinates the UNESCO Chair on Education for Sustainable Development with the Earth Charter and served as a member of the UNESCO Expert Reference Group for the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD). Over the years she has led and facilitated numerous international workshops, courses and seminars on values and principles for sustainability. Prior to her work with the Earth Charter, Mirian worked for the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) for two years in preparation of the 1992 UN Earth Summit and a year at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). She actively participated in the 2002 World Summit of Sustainable Development, held in Johannesburg, and the 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development/Rio+20. Mirian holds a PhD. in Education from LaSalle University and a Master´s Degree in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, where she was an Edward Mason Fellow. She is originally from Brazil.

Dr. Mallika Vasugi

Prof. Dr. Mallika Vasugi Govindarajoo
Professor
Dean of Faculty of Education and Humanities
UNITAR International University

Prof. Dr. Mallika Vasugi Govindarajoo is a Professor in UNITAR International University and Dean of the Faculty of Education and Humanities. Prof. Dr. Mallika has had more than 36 years of experience in the education industry having served under the Ministry of Education, Malaysia as a teacher and later as advisor of the Trust school transformation project before taking up the appointment in UNITAR.

She is also a columnist with The Star, a leading Malaysian daily and writes for the column, Teacher Talk. As a consultant and trainer for their Newspaper in Education (NIE) programme Prof. Dr. Mallika has also facilitated workshops and courses for both students and teachers throughout the country. Prof. Dr. Mallika’s main field of interest is creative writing and some of her short stories have won national awards. Mallika has also participated and presented at creative writing conferences in different parts of Asia.

Dr. Chandran Abraham holds a PhD in TESL from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Master of Science in TESL from Universiti Putra Malaysia , Bachelor of Education in TESOL from Heriot Watt University, United Kingdom and Post-Graduate Counseling Certificate from Moray House Institute of Education, United Kingdom. He is a recipient of the International Award of Fethi Azaiez / Stanley Ndeke Memorial Prize from the United Kingdom. He has more than 40 years of working experience as an educator. He is involved in the implementation of various national and international programmes in the field of teacher education, Leadership and Management, and corporate training programmes under the Ministry of Education Malaysia and International organizations.

Dr Shamsul Nizam bin Kachi Mohideen
Principal Assistant Director
Ministry of Education Malaysia

An experienced English Language teacher with almost 25 years of service, has taught both in rural Borneo and a boarding school in Selangor, before continuing his PhD in Monash University, Melbourne. He also has academic teaching experience in both private and public universities and has actively been involved as a teacher trainer as well as a consultant and a researcher with UNESCO Jakarta and public universities such as UNIMAS, UKM, USM and UiTM. Currently, he is attached to MOE Malaysia as a Principal Assistant Director overlooking international linkages for all 28 campuses of Teacher Training Institutes.

Associate Professor Ts Dr Tan Wee Hoe
Head of Research and Postgraduate Studies
Faculty of Social Sciences and Liberal Arts in UCSI University, Malaysia

Dr. Wee Hoe Tan is an Associate Professor and the Head of Research and Postgraduate Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Liberal Arts in UCSI University, Malaysia. Dr Tan received a PhD in Education, specializing in game-based learning from University of Warwick. He began working between the creative industry and the academia, facilitating university-industry collaboration in Malaysia, UK and US. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, he was a Visiting Faculty at SUTD Game Lab, Singapore, a Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow at the Penn State College of Education, and a Visiting Research Scientist at the Play2Prevent Lab, Yale Center for Health and Learning Games. His research interests spread across various fields in creative multimedia and inventive problem solving.

Dr. Dorothy DeWitt
Research Fellow
Curriculum and Instructional Technology Department,
University of Malaya

Dr. Dorothy DeWitt is a Research Fellow at the Curriculum and Instructional Technology Department, University of Malaya. She was a recipient of the Endeavour Executive Fellowship (Australia) and has been involved in research using collaborative and mobile learning as well as designs of instructional systems with technologies for schools, higher education and training. Her current research interests are in new pedagogies for learning. She has consulted on projects related to curriculum acceptance, and digital learning and has been involved in training for improving instructors’ technology pedagogical content knowledge. She has won awards in teaching innovations both at the national and international level.

Nina has been involved in the Malaysian education system for the past 30 years, as a lecturer, researcher, consultant, publisher, and most importantly, as a mother of three! She has held a variety of leadership roles covering the entire spectrum of learning and development, including Law Faculty Dean at HELP University, CEO of Malaysia Airlines Academy and Asia Pacific Schools. She is currently Executive Director at LeapEd Services, a social enterprise committed to education transformation.

In 2021, she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award for Education Excellence from KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific and now serves as an Adjunct Professor for Strategic Education Planning at UNITAR International University.

Te Rito Maioha, Early Childhood New Zealand (ECNZ)

Rosina is the Director of Teaching, Learning and Research for Te Rito Maioha (ECNZ), and is an Adjunct Professor UNITAR International University.  She has the overall responsibility for the oversight and management of academic and research strategy for undergraduate, graduate and post graduate programmes.  She has a passion for e-learning with a particular focus on student engagement and lecturer presence. Rosina’s research interests include the use of technology in the delivery teacher education, language culture and identity in online learning spaces and integrated curriculum

Te Rito Maioha, Early Childhood New Zealand (ECNZ)

Tracey is the Research Leader for Te Rito Maioha (ECNZ) and is an Adjunct Professor at Unitar. She has the overall responsibility for the oversight, management, and promotion of research for the organisation. Importantly, this role is to support staff with their research and ensure published outcomes inform Te Rito Maioha’s early childhood, primary and teacher education programmes.

Both Tracey’s Masters and Doctoral studies focussed on transitions, how these can provide opportunities for professional learning and the place of leadership in transition. Her research portfolio illustrates her involvement with various education sectors and includes a broad range of topics, including her passion for coaching and mentoring emerging researchers.

Te Rito Maioha, Early Childhood New Zealand (ECNZ)

Arapera Card is of Māori descent (indigenous of Aotearoa, New Zealand).  Arapera is responsible for ensuring that Te Rito Maioha (ECNZ) maintains its bicultural integrity by providing cultural leadership and leading the implementation and application of the organisation’s Bicultural Strategic Plan and Pacific Strategic Plan.   Arapera also contributes to the development and delivery of academic and professional development programmes delivered to the ECE sector sharing knowledge and capability through a Māori world view.  Arapera champions the integration of tikanga (protocols), and kaupapa (practices) among teachers, students and children, growing knowledge and learning of the language, culture and identity of the indigenous peoples of Aotearoa, New Zealand. 

Hongwei Di
Lecturer & International Business Development Lead (Asia)
Te Rito Maioha, Early Childhood New Zealand (ECNZ)

Hongwei has backgrounds in early childhood education and cross-country educational development, particularly between New Zealand and China. With 15 years’ working experience in tertiary institutions in New Zealand, Hongwei developed wide ranges of knowledge and experiences of New Zealand education development in the international arena.

Hongwei began her teaching career in China as a primary school teacher, then moved to early childhood education (ECE) and tertiary teaching in New Zealand. A specific research area in ECE curriculum development under different cultural contexts is Hongwei’s interest. In 2019-2020, she was part of an international professional development team at the University of Waikato working with Chinese Kindergarten teachers to unpack New Zealand ECE and its curriculum for their localised, play-based teaching and learning. With the support from her current employer, Te Rito Maioha, Hongwei translated New Zealand’s world-renowned early childhood education curriculum, Te Whāriki, into Mandarin.

International Education development is another focus in Hongwei’s career. During the 15 years’ working experience in New Zealand, she had worked at Waikato Institute of Technology (2006-2008) and the University of Waikato (2013-2020) as the International Development Coordinator. Currently, Hongwei is the lecturer of Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) programme and International Business Development Lead (Asia) at Te Rito Maioha Early Childhood New Zealand to continue her research and educational development domestically and internationally.  

Hongwei Di is living in Hamilton, New Zealand with her mum, husband and two boys.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Norshima binti Zainal Shah
National Defence University of Malaysia

Norshima has been in the Language Centre UPNM since June 2004. She has held many administrative positions including Director of the Language Centre, Deputy Director of the Academic Development Centre, and Deputy Director of the Language Centre.

She has 18 years of university teaching experience and altogether 28 years of English language teaching experience. She holds a PhD in Humanities and Social Sciences (Critical Thinking) from Dublin City University in Ireland, as well as an MSc and a B.Ed. (TESL) from Universiti Putra Malaysia.

She now mentors the students’ business company, The English Language House (TELaH), which offers English language courses and services such as public speaking, grammar, proofreading, and translation. She is a TESL and Critical Thinking practitioner and a founding member of Toastmasters International Club (PERWIRA Toastmasters Club) at the university.

Norshima is a conscientious and industrious individual. Her latest accomplishments include winning the Dale Carnegie Highest Award for Achievement and a final mark of 99.58 percent in the Open Program Spring 2021 course: Integrating Critical Thinking into the Exploration of Culture in an EFL Setting.

Azlan Sharom
Director of National Schools
International Schools Partnership (SEA), operator of Tenby Schools and Asia Pacific Schools (Malaysia)

A graduate of Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Sheffield, Azlan’s career developed along the lines of of education, stakeholder management and organisational development. Beginning at a leading multinational semiconductor manufacturing company, he has since held various senior management positions in organisations relating to education in schools and spent three years in the service of the Government of Malaysia, which provided first-hand exposure to matters of national policy and administration, while developing a broad appreciation of work cultures in both private and public sectors. His interest in human and organisational development was further enhanced while employed at a global upstream oil and gas services provider.

Since January 2021, he has been the Director of National Schools (Malaysia) at International Schools Partnership Limited, a British educational organisation that operates schools across six regions worldwide, including Southeast Asia. He oversees the development of five private national curriculum schools in Penang, Perak, Selangor and Johor, with a combined enrolment of almost 2,500 students. Azlan is also Chairman for the Board of Trustees of Insan Siddiq Bhd, a non-profit organisation that advocates integrity as a human issue and sets out to educate and cultivate future generations who are morally, intellectually, and spiritually accomplished persons.

GUIDELINES FOR CONFERENCE PAPERS

  1. Papers must NOT exceed 5,000 words in length (2,000 words for work-in-progress papers), including abstracts, figures, references and appendices.
  2. Abstract must NOT exceed 250 words in a single paragraph.
  3. Before submitting your paper, please ensure it has been carefully read for typographical and grammatical errors.
  4. Papers should be submitted as a .doc (E.g. paper_name.doc) attachment by email.
  5. The email address is given on the conference call for papers.
  6. Papers must NOT be sent in PDF format and should not be zipped.
