Choosing a pathway isn’t just about the fastest route to a degree. It’s about picking the one that fits how you learn, what you want to achieve, and how much flexibility you need. Here’s what each option actually looks like.
The Three Main Pathways to a Degree
For Malaysian students coming out of secondary school, there are three main routes to a bachelor’s degree:
- SPM â Foundation â Degree
- SPM â Diploma â Degree (via credit transfer)
- STPM â Degree (direct entry)
Each has a different total duration, a different experience along the way, and suits a different type of student. None of them is objectively better â the right one depends on you.
SPM to Foundation to Degree
A Foundation programme is a one-year pre-university course designed for SPM holders. It covers introductory degree-level content in your chosen field â science, business, arts, and so on â and on completion, gives you direct entry into Year 1 of a bachelor’s degree.
What it looks like in practice:
- 1 year Foundation + 3 years Degree = approximately 4 years total to a bachelor’s degree
- Full-time study, typically on-campus
- Entry requirement: SPM results with minimum passes in relevant subjects
- Focuses on academic preparation â not a standalone qualification
Best for: Students who are clear on their degree field, want to move through to a degree as quickly as possible after SPM, and are comfortable with a more academic, classroom-based pre-university year.
SPM to Diploma to Degree
A diploma takes longer than a Foundation upfront â typically 2.5 to 3 years â but it earns you a recognised qualification in its own right. At UNITAR, diploma graduates can then enter a related bachelor’s degree at Year 2 through credit transfer, which shortens the remaining degree duration.
What it looks like in practice:
- 2.5â3 years Diploma + approximately 2 years Degree = roughly 4.5 to 5 years total
- Practical, industry-oriented learning â less purely academic than Foundation
- Diploma itself is an MQA-accredited qualification, recognised by employers
- PTPTN financing available for eligible diploma students at UNITAR
Best for: Students who want a qualification they can use even if they pause before continuing to a degree, prefer hands-on learning over academic-style coursework, or want to test a field before committing to a full degree in it.

STPM to Degree
STPM (Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia) is a rigorous post-SPM qualification completed over approximately 1.5 years at government schools. It is widely recognised as equivalent to A-Levels and qualifies holders for direct entry into Year 1 of a bachelor’s degree at most Malaysian universities, including UNITAR.
What it looks like in practice:
- 1.5 years STPM + 3 years Degree = approximately 4.5 years total
- No additional pre-university programme needed after STPM
- Entry is subject to minimum grade requirements and subject prerequisites per programmeÂ
- STPM is government-subsidised â typically lower cost than private Foundation programmes
Best for: Students who have already completed STPM with solid results, are confident in their degree field choice, and want to move directly into degree study without an additional bridging programme.

Which Pathway Is Right for You?
There’s no single correct answer, but these questions help narrow it down:
Choose Foundation if you’ve just finished SPM, you’re certain about your degree field, and you want to start your degree as soon as possible without earning a separate qualification first.
Choose Diploma if you want something to show for the first phase of your studies, you’re not yet 100% sure about your degree direction, or you’d rather learn through practical coursework than academic preparation.
Choose the STPM route if you’ve already completed STPM with results that meet your target programme’s entry requirements â going back to Foundation or Diploma would mean extra time with no added benefit.
