UNITAR International University hosted content creator, filmmaker, and musician Jenn Chia, known online as @soimjenn, for a hands-on workshop designed to help students turn everyday campus experiences into engaging stories
The two-hour session gave participants the opportunity to apply what they had learnt by creating their own video stories. Selected groupsâ videos were then screened for all participants, with Jenn providing live feedback.
The winning group, comprising three students, was announced on 2 October 2026, and its video was shared on UNITARâs TIkTok account. The winning group comprises of Nor Fatini Nor Azizi from bachelors in fashion design and marketing, Shamalah Ramalingam from bachelors of Education and Letchumy Subramaniam a Diploma in Interior Design student who each won a Content Creator Starter Kit and vouchers.
Under the theme âYour campus. Your POV. Your content.â, participants had the opportunity to explore how their observations and experiences can become the starting point for original content.Â
The workshop focused on developing a clear storytelling angle and making deliberate filming and editing choices. Students also learnt how editing can influence a storyâs mood and meaning, practiced creating content in public, and tested their work with a real audience.
By combining instruction with a practical challenge, the session provided students an opportunity to experiment with visual storytelling using a tool they already have: their smartphones. No prior content creation experience is required.
According to Timothy Johnson, Chief Commercial Officer of UNITAR Education Group, “Our students come to university with interests and ambitions that deserve room to develop. Content creation has opened up real career and income opportunities, and many young people are keen to explore its possibilities.Â
Workshops like this helps students to develop skills, confidence and judgement to turn their ambitions into something tangible. Learning directly from practitioners such as Jenn gives them a clearer understanding of the work behind the creativity and a starting point for pursuing their dreams.â Â
The winners share their enthusiasm for attending the workshop and after their win.
âI was hoping we would win, but I was still surprised when our group was chosen from so many others. I love vlogging and would like to become an influencer one day, although I can be quite shy and worry about negative comments. Hearing Jenn explaining that there will always be people who criticise us, made me feel a little braver about trying. I am really excited about the prizes, too. Theyâll be a big help as I keep learning and making videos,â said 17-year-old Letchumy Subramaniam.
âIt was exciting to learn from Jenn and have a chance to try out our ideas in the competition. Winning was a lovely surprise, and I am grateful for the experience. As a fashion student, I would love to explore how videos can help me share my designs and ideas. The workshop has given me more confidence to give it a go,â said 20 year old Nor Fatini Nor Azizi.
The workshop offered students a space to explore their creativity, build confidence in expressing their ideas, and consider how their individual perspectives can shape the stories they tell.
